A recent interview with Duane Peters
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST BRAWL YOU’VE EVER BEEN IN? I’ve been in so many fuck’n brawls-I’ve been getting beat up in punk rock since ’77, but I can beat myself up better than anyone. WHAT’S YOUR WORST INJURY? I’ve had so many injuries, I don’t know which is the worst one. I’ve recovered from them all, weirdly. I got into stair diving about two years ago. I’ve dived down almost every set of stairs in America. I’ve done Coney Island High, Maritime Hall in San Francisco, everything. I don’t know why, I just get drunk and think that I’m Evil Kenevel. WHAT’S BEEN YOUR WORST INJURY SKATING? I get hurt skating more than playing. I’ve broken my collar bone 16 times, 8 times on both sides, both my ankles several times, all my fingers, all my toes. I jumped out of a four story building and bent my knee the wrong way. That was probably the worst injury. It was about a three year recovery because I didn’t have surgery. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO PLAY? We’ve played thousands of places. My favorite would have to be Mt. Ridley in England. We were the only American punk band to get an encore in 20 years. I met all my old heroes over there, though they were all pussies. Sorry I keep spitting on you, I don’t have any teeth. THAT’S OK. We played in front of 17,000 people. It was pretty cool. I fell off the stage, got really hammered. I also had a good time in Kansas City playing for 13 kids in a back ally way singing through a guitar amp. INFLUENCES? All the old stuff, I love GG Allin, Neal Guthrie, Frank Sinatra, The Clash, I love The Clash, The Pistols, The old Sex Pistols, Frank Black, Sham 69, Some New York, some L.A. IS THAT WHERE YOU’R FROM? Uh Huh, Orange County. ARE YOU GUYS SETTLED DOWN? We all do our thing. I got a girl back home, I’m getting married. I love her to death, I write songs about her, she’s on all our records. ARE YOU STILL ON BEER CITY? Uh Huh, I was just there yesterday, I’m the oldest guy in the world. I’m turning 39 next month and I can still outskate most of these kids and a lot of the pros unless they get switchstance or whatever, but I can outskate them in a pool. IS THAT YOUR FAVORITE THING TO SKATE? Yeah, I’m into style I invented a lot of tricks so I stick to what I know. WHAT’S THE ALBUM? Bombs The World. WORDS OF WISDOM? Yeah, don’t take life so seriously, take it to the most, you gotta follow your dreams, punk rock is individuality, don’t believe in adults telling you that you gotta do what they want you to do-it’s a lie-you gotta do what you want to.

“Independent is punk rock…the cross… you can’t beat it.”

Duane is one of those guys who defines style; and that style changed the face of skateboarding forever. Call it punk. Call it hesh. Call it haggard. Call it what you want, but it is far from organized team jerseys and coaches. To put it bluntly, Duane regards style as more important than simply landing a tech skate trick. Style also has a lot to do with confidence and balls.

Coined, “The Master of Disaster” back in the 70s, Duane Peters is a downright pioneer of the fundamentals of modern skateboarding. He could roll in on just about anything no matter how much vert loomed beneath him and innovated numerous tricks throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s. Tricks like the Indy air, the sweeper, the fakie thruster, the layback roll out, and the invert revert all modified the perception of what every skateboarder thought was possible at the time. And to his credit, many people may not know that DP was the first to ever complete a full loop around a 14’ plexiglass pipe in the fall of 1978 and that it wasn’t done again until 1998.

An unlikely hero yesterday or today, Duane finds thrills in many of the same things he did 25 years ago. As the front man in two successful punk bands, US Bombs and The Hunns, Duane’s been touring the world extensively playing sold out shows and skateboarding like he’s a re-born teenager. He’s lived a life with too many hellish episodes to recount, but it’s encouraging that once again skateboarding’s roots are being embraced and a guy like Duane Peters can actually benefit from what he’s continued to do for all these years; skateboard and play some good old punk rock music.

He doesn't give a fuck about you
American punk diverges into many sub-categories. Southern California's U.S. Bombs produce that bastard of punk some call anarchist. Really, it's genuine '77 English punk mixed with a little Americanized hardcore.

who cares we're all gonna die anyway
Is the lead singer in LA's most frighteningly real punk band of the last decade...US BOMBS. He's lived, abused and fucked around the block so many times it's a miracle he's still alive. So when I spotted these columns on the Epitaph site (thanx to Erin) I couldn't resist but to swipe em and display em here. I seen some really great ones from previous tours that I lost In the midsts of time? So if anyone knows where there's more of Duanes diary writing I'd be very interested and so would you.

Kiss me I'm beautiful

"I'm a sellout, how do you like that? Yeah I'm a sellout and I have no money. My kids hate me"
